‘Gator Guard Outs Anonymous Lock-Cutting Crook
Commercial Site Security matters most when traditional methods fail to stop ongoing theft or vandalism at your job site.
So, what can you do when a thief keeps breaking into your truck and stealing expensive tools? Depending on your job site’s location, you might have some creative options to consider. For example, one clever construction worker used his pets—and raw chicken—to deliver a wild and unforgettable dose of justice.
The Gator, the Truck, and the Problem
In the early 1970s, a young man worked on a job site near a swamp.
One day, he noticed an alligator lounging nearby and, being an animal lover, started feeding it raw chicken during lunch.
Eventually, he shared his break with the gator daily, building a strange but peaceful routine.
Surprisingly, the rest of the crew liked their new “mascot” and didn’t mind having it around the site.
However, a thief also worked there and refused to return expensive tools borrowed from others.
Soon after, he began breaking into the young man’s truck and taking whatever he wanted.
Not even a new lock stopped him; he broke it—likely using a tool he had already stolen.
That final act pushed the young man too far, and he decided to take matters into his own hands.
Time for a Thorny Trap and a Cold-Blooded Guard
The young man backed his truck into a briar patch, hoping the thief would reconsider the painful risk.
Next, he placed raw chicken in the back seat and invited his alligator friend to wait patiently inside.
About two hours later, loud screaming echoed across the job site from the direction of the parked truck.
Worried that someone was seriously hurt, the crew dropped everything and ran toward the source of the noise.
They discovered the thief tangled in briars, scratched and panicked, as the alligator crept calmly out of the truck.
Unbothered by the chaos, the reptile hissed and slowly returned to the swamp without looking back.
Busted! The criminal was caught, and the entire crew witnessed the wild but effective outcome firsthand.
Justice Served—Swamp Style
We’re not sure what was worse—the embarrassment or the fact a two-foot gator handled the construction site security issue.
What we do know: after that day, not a single tool went missing from the job site again.
A family member of the gator-befriending worker shared this wild story in an online forum.
The shared lunches? They continued long after the incident and throughout the remainder of the project.
